It may happen, sometimes, that the colours of the scenery are changed
completery. The sun pours its bright rays on the town. They penetrate
the clouds and burst into a colourful rainbow, so that the town turns
blue, green and orange at the same time. Or suddenly, a cold wind begins
to rise, driving ahead flakes of snow. A snow-fall is likely even in june.
A fast snow blanket usually forms in November and melts away late in April
or early in May.
In winter, the town is shrouded by the polar night, and it will be dark
or dusky whenever you come there in December. In winter, the skies at
night are lit up by the fantastic flares of the Aurora Borealis. Each
time it sends forth an inimitable gamut of strikingly gentle and quivering
colours. Murmansk is worth visiting if only to enjoy the sight of this
miracle of nature. It may, however, be outshone by the glow of electric
lights.
