Murmansk region is situated on the Kola Peninsula.
Our region is bounded by Norway. It is washed by
the Barents Sea and by the White Sea. The Kola Peninsula's central part
is covered with mountains. Long and short rivers flow into the Kola Inlet.
There are 1200 big and small lakes on the territory of the Kola Peninsula.
There are no big forests because of the severe climate and blowing winds
from the Arctic Ocean.
Winter is very cold and long there; summer is very
short and rather cool. It often rains in autumn. Our region is famous
for its Polar Days and Polar Nights.
The main town is Murmansk. It stands on the Kola Bay. It was founded in 1916 and first was called Romanov-on-Murman.
But let us go back to modern Murmansk. This is the largest, most handsome
and well-appointed town behind the Arctic Circle.
